## Description
DeepL translation: translate, usage, source/target languages. Free 500k chars/mo.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "deepl": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@pipeworx/mcp-deepl"],
    "env": {
      "PLATFORM_DEEPL_KEY": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `PLATFORM_DEEPL_KEY` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What Deepl does

Deepl MCP server connects AI agents to the DeepL API at either the paid endpoint, `https://api.deepl.com/v2`, or the free endpoint, `https://api-free.deepl.com/v2`. It provides translation along with read-only account and language metadata operations. Translation can process a single string or an array of strings, making the server suitable for individual responses as well as small batches.

The translation operation supports target and optional source languages, including language codes such as `EN-US`, `DE`, `JA`, `ES`, and `FR`. Additional controls cover sentence splitting, formatting preservation, formality, glossaries, and markup tag handling. The server also exposes the current month's character usage and limits, supported source languages, supported target languages, and supported glossary language pairs.

## How it works

A local installation communicates through MCP over stdin and stdout. In this mode, only the Deepl pack's tools are exposed and requests go directly through the package's configured DeepL access path.

The hosted option uses a Pipeworx MCP endpoint. A pack-specific gateway URL lists the Deepl tools together with Pipeworx shared tools such as `ask_pipeworx`, discovery, search, and memory operations. The same gateway can route broader requests through `ask_pipeworx`; connecting to the full gateway instead lists all packs directly. Both gateway URLs use the same underlying Pipeworx service.

Keys ending in `:fx` are detected as free-tier keys and select the DeepL free API endpoint. Other keys use the paid endpoint. The package is an independent, unofficial DeepL integration.

## Setup and configuration

For a local stdio configuration, add the following MCP server entry:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "deepl": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-deepl"]
    }
  }
}
```

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-deepl` directly to verify that the process starts. The hosted configuration uses:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "deepl": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/deepl/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

Authentication can use the Pipeworx platform key `PLATFORM_DEEPL_KEY`, or a caller-supplied key through the `_apiKey` argument. HTTP callers can invoke `POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/deepl_translate` and include their own key in the request arguments. The package is also available through the full Pipeworx gateway at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp`.

## Tools and capabilities

- `translate`: Translate one string or an array of strings.
- `usage`: Return the current month's character count and limit.
- `source_languages`: List supported source languages.
- `target_languages`: List supported target languages.
- `glossary_language_pairs`: List language pairs supported by glossaries.

`translate` accepts `target_lang` and optional `source_lang`. Its other options include `split_sentences`, `preserve_formatting`, `formality`, `glossary_id`, `tag_handling`, `outline_detection`, `non_splitting_tags`, `splitting_tags`, and `ignore_tags`. Supported formality values are `default`, `more`, `less`, `prefer_more`, and `prefer_less`.

## Limitations and notes

The shared Pipeworx key currently returns HTTP 456 for `translate`. Read-only operations such as `usage`, `source_languages`, `target_languages`, and `glossary_language_pairs` remain available with that key. Use a personal DeepL key through `_apiKey` for translation.

A pack endpoint includes shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the Deepl tools, so its tool list is larger than the five operations above. The local stdio server exposes only the Deepl tools. DeepL's free tier is limited to 500,000 characters per month.
