## Description
Query databases from AI agents using connections configured in DBX.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation

## Documentation

## What dbx does

dbx connects AI agents to database connections configured in DBX and exposes database querying through the Model Context Protocol. The surrounding DBX application is positioned as a database manager with support for more than 100 databases, giving the MCP layer access to a broad range of database systems through DBX-managed connections.

The project is distributed as a compact package, described as fitting more than 100 database integrations into 25 MB. DBX is also presented as open source and built with Rust. Alongside its MCP server, the broader product includes a desktop application, Docker option, command-line interface, and built-in AI assistant.

## How it works

First configure database connections in DBX. Agents can then use the MCP server to query databases through those connections. This separates connection management from the agent client: DBX is responsible for the configured database access, while MCP provides the interface an agent uses to request queries.

The server is therefore suited to workflows where an agent needs to inspect or retrieve database information using connections already organized in DBX.

## Setup and configuration

DBX can be used through several distribution modes:

- Desktop application
- Docker
- Command-line interface
- MCP server

Configure the target database connections in DBX before using the MCP interface. The choice between desktop, Docker, and CLI depends on how the surrounding database workflow is operated. A desktop setup may suit local use, while Docker or the CLI can fit environments that already run database tooling outside a graphical application.

The key configuration concept is the DBX connection: agents query databases through connections managed there. Keep those connections configured in the DBX environment used by the MCP server.

## Tools and capabilities

- Query databases from AI agents through MCP.
- Use database connections configured in DBX.
- Work with a database manager that supports more than 100 databases.
- Run DBX through desktop, Docker, or CLI distributions.

## Limitations and notes

The MCP capability described for dbx is database querying through DBX-configured connections. The available project description does not establish support for database writes, migrations, user management, or other administrative actions, so evaluate those requirements separately before adopting it for broader database automation.

DBX includes other product features, such as a built-in AI assistant, but those should not be assumed to be MCP tools. The MCP server is the relevant component when an external AI agent needs to access DBX-managed database connections.
