## Description
Bloomington Open Data (data.bloomington.in.gov) Socrata MCP.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **datasets** — Search the Bloomington Open Data catalog of open datasets by keyword. Returns each dataset's resource_id, name, description, category and update date — pass the resource_id to query/metadata.
- **query** — Run a Socrata SoQL query against a Bloomington Open Data dataset by resource_id (e.g. "yv82-z42g"). Filter with where/select/group/order (SoQL clauses, without the leading $) plus limit/offset. Returns matching rows as JSON.
- **metadata** — Get a Bloomington Open Data dataset's schema + metadata (columns, types, row count, category, last-updated) by resource_id, e.g. "yv82-z42g".

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "data-bloomington": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@pipeworx/mcp-data-bloomington"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What Data Bloomington does

Data Bloomington exposes Bloomington Open Data as MCP tools for dataset discovery and structured retrieval. The service works with datasets hosted at data.bloomington.in.gov and identifies each resource with a Socrata resource ID. That ID is used to inspect a dataset or query its rows.

The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the upstream data provider. Its focus is Bloomington’s open-data catalog, rather than a general-purpose data search service.

## How it works

Start with `datasets` when the relevant resource is unknown. The tool searches the catalog by keyword and returns matching dataset names, descriptions, categories, update dates, and resource IDs. Pass a returned resource ID to the other tools.

Use `metadata` to inspect a dataset before querying it. The response includes its columns, data types, row count, category, and last-updated information. Use `query` to retrieve records with Socrata SoQL parameters. Filtering, projection, grouping, and sorting are supplied through `where`, `select`, `group`, and `order`; `limit` and `offset` support result pagination. SoQL clauses are provided without the leading dollar sign, and query results are returned as JSON rows.

The gateway endpoint supports MCP connections at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-bloomington/mcp`. The full Pipeworx gateway is also available at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp`. A scoped gateway connection lists the Bloomington tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools, including routing and discovery functions. A local installation exposes only the Bloomington pack’s tools.

## Setup and configuration

For a gateway connection, add the MCP endpoint to a compatible client:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-bloomington": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/data-bloomington/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

For a standalone stdio process, configure the package through `npx`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "data-bloomington": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-data-bloomington"]
    }
  }
}
```

The package can also be started directly with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-data-bloomington`. It communicates over stdin and stdout and does not require a Pipeworx account. The gateway offers HTTP tool calls as well, including `POST /v1/tools/data_bloomington_datasets` with a JSON `query` field.

## Tools and capabilities

- `datasets`: Find Bloomington Open Data resources by keyword.
- `metadata`: Inspect schema, types, row count, category, and update information.
- `query`: Execute SoQL queries with filtering, selection, grouping, ordering, limits, and offsets.
- Local stdio operation through the published npm package.
- MCP access through the scoped or full Pipeworx gateway.

## Limitations and notes

Gateway pack endpoints include shared Pipeworx meta-tools in addition to the three Bloomington tools. The exact gateway tool list can change, while the standalone package exposes only the pack tools. The `ask_pipeworx` gateway function can route broader questions across Pipeworx sources, but it is not part of the standalone process.

The gateway and local modes use the same Bloomington source and tool set. The HTTP examples provide a way to call tools without an MCP client. The first gateway calls do not require an account. MIT licensing applies.
