## Description
MCP server for CostKits: live healthcare procedure cost estimates and provider pricing.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **resolve_procedure** — Match a plain-language procedure name to a supported procedure
- **list_procedures** — The procedure catalog with CPT codes
- **get_procedure_details** — Billing rules, cost drivers, and which separate bills to expect
- **estimate_procedure_cost** — Cost range in a state, with expected out-of-pocket if you give plan details
- **full_estimate** — Procedure, cost, providers, and liability in one call
- **calculate_liability** — Deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket math for a dollar amount
- **find_providers** — Providers with observed hospital-transparency prices (up to 10 per call)
- **get_provider** — Public profile for one provider by NPI
- **get_coverage** — Prior auth, cost-sharing, and frequency rules by carrier
- **list_carriers** — Supported insurance carriers
- **demo_estimate** — Sample estimate, for checking your connection

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "costkits-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@costkits/costkits-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "COSTKITS_API_KEY": "",
      "COSTKITS_API_BASE": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `COSTKITS_API_KEY`, `COSTKITS_API_BASE` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What costkits-mcp MCP server does

The costkits-mcp MCP server exposes CostKits healthcare pricing and coverage operations to MCP-compatible AI clients. It is intended for questions about US procedure costs, patient out-of-pocket responsibility, provider pricing, insurance rules, and potential billing problems.

The service can translate informal descriptions such as a user’s description of a scan into a supported procedure, then use that procedure for pricing or coverage queries. It can also combine procedure, geographic cost, provider, and benefit information into a fuller estimate. Results may include estimate ranges, data sources, data vintage, and model version.

## How it works

An MCP client sends a request to the local server over stdio. The server selects and calls the corresponding CostKits API operation, then returns structured data for the client to explain. API errors can include an `agent_hint` indicating a next tool or correction, such as resolving an unsupported procedure name before retrying an estimate.

The costkits-mcp MCP server uses CostKits data derived from hospital-transparency and CMS sources. Insurance calculations are performed by the API using inputs such as deductible balance, coinsurance, copay, and out-of-pocket information rather than being calculated by the language model.

Bill analysis accepts billing codes, descriptions, and amounts to identify possible duplicate, unbundled, or suspicious items. The documented workflow does not require patient names, member IDs, dates of birth, or medical-record identifiers.

## Setup and configuration

Install the package from npm with the package name `@costkits/costkits-mcp`, or run it through `npx`. A typical Claude Desktop configuration starts the server with `npx -y @costkits/costkits-mcp` and supplies `COSTKITS_API_KEY` in the environment. Restart the client after changing its MCP configuration.

`COSTKITS_API_KEY` is needed for every tool except `demo_estimate`; keys are available from CostKits. `COSTKITS_API_BASE` is optional and defaults to `https://api.costkits.com`, allowing the API endpoint to be overridden for testing.

Local development requires Node.js 18 or later and npm. The repository includes a smoke command that starts the server and calls the demo tool over MCP stdio.

## Tools and capabilities

The costkits-mcp MCP server provides these groups of operations:

- `demo_estimate` checks connectivity with a sample estimate without an API key.
- `resolve_procedure`, `estimate_procedure_cost`, `calculate_liability`, and `full_estimate` support procedure matching, geographic pricing, benefit calculations, and combined estimates.
- `find_providers` searches providers with observed negotiated prices, while `get_provider` retrieves a provider by NPI.
- `list_procedures` and `get_procedure_details` expose supported procedures, CPT codes, billing bundles, and procedure facts.
- `get_coverage` returns prior-authorization, cost-sharing, frequency, and trigger rules; `list_carriers` returns supported carrier identifiers.
- `analyze_bill` reviews line items for possible duplicate, unbundled, or suspicious charges.

Tool availability depends on the CostKits plan. The README identifies most operations as Builder tools, coverage triggers as Pro, and bill analysis as Pro.

## Limitations and notes

This server provides healthcare cost and coverage data, not a substitute for a payer decision or provider-specific confirmation. Estimates depend on available geographic, provider, procedure, and benefit inputs. For bill analysis, send only the codes, descriptions, and amounts needed for the review; do not send protected health information.

The documented tested client setup is Claude Desktop, and the server uses MCP stdio transport. A public demo tool is available, but authenticated access is required for the remaining operations.
