## Description
Company search and enrichment from official business registers in 200+ countries.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "companydata": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@companydata/mcp-server"],
    "env": {
      "COMPANYDATA_API_KEY": "",
      "COMPANYDATA_API_BASE_URL": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `COMPANYDATA_API_KEY`, `COMPANYDATA_API_BASE_URL` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What CompanyData MCP server does

The CompanyData MCP server makes selected CompanyData HTTP API operations available as MCP tools. It is intended for agents that need to find companies, retrieve enriched company data, or resolve city-related search fields.

The service covers company data sourced through the CompanyData API, which describes company search and enrichment from official business registers in more than 200 countries. The available interface is limited to the tools documented by the project: company search, company enrichment, and city lookup.

## How it works

The server provides three tools:

- `company_search` calls the API company search endpoint.
- `company_enrich` calls the company export endpoint with an identifier and export mode enabled.
- `field_lookup` calls the cities endpoint to return location suggestions.

You can connect to the hosted endpoint at `https://companydata.com/mcp/`. This deployment uses Streamable HTTP, is stateless, and expects the API key in the `x-api-key` request header. The same tools are also available from the npm package, which runs locally and sends requests to the CompanyData API.

## Setup and configuration

The hosted option does not require a local installation. Configure your MCP client with the endpoint URL and provide an API key obtained from CompanyData. The README includes configurations for Claude Code and Cursor.

For local use, install Node.js 18 or newer and run `@companydata/mcp-server` with `npx`. The required `COMPANYDATA_API_KEY` environment variable is sent as `x-api-key` on every request. `COMPANYDATA_API_BASE_URL` is optional and defaults to `https://app.companydata.com`; it must not include a trailing slash.

The project can also be built from source with `npm install` followed by `npm run build`. After building, start the generated Node.js entry point, or run the TypeScript source with `tsx` during development. Copying `.env.example` to `.env` is supported for local testing when the environment is loaded into the shell.

With the CompanyData MCP server, client configuration uses either a command and arguments for local stdio execution or a URL and headers for the hosted service. Reload the MCP host after changing its configuration.

## Tools and capabilities

`company_search` is used for searches against `/api/company/search`. `company_enrich` queries `/api/company/export` using an `ID` and `export=true`, providing the documented export-based enrichment operation. `field_lookup` queries `/api/cities`, allowing an agent to obtain city suggestions such as matches for a partial city name.

The repository also publishes an OpenAPI contract and lists the hosted service, npm package, and official MCP Registry identifier. A basic smoke test can confirm that the process starts, the three tools are listed, company search returns a successful response, and city lookup returns suggestions.

## Limitations and notes

An API key is required for requests in both hosted and local configurations. The API base URL can be changed locally, but the hosted configuration uses the published CompanyData endpoint. The documented tools do not describe general-purpose database access or arbitrary CompanyData API operations beyond the three listed tools.

The repository is licensed under ISC. The hosted service is stateless, so clients should not assume server-side session state between requests.
