## Documentation

## What Community Funding NZ MCP server does

Community Funding NZ MCP server exposes All Too Human's database of New Zealand community grant funders through the Model Context Protocol. The database covers more than 380 funders and includes information such as funding rounds, closing dates, opening dates, and application questions.

The hosted service is available at `https://funding.alltoohuman.nz/mcp`. It uses Streamable HTTP and does not require a login. Agents can search for funders, retrieve an individual funder's details, inspect available filters, and find rounds that are closing or opening soon.

## How it works

An MCP-compatible client connects to the hosted `/mcp` endpoint and invokes the exposed tools or prompts. The available tools include `search_funders`, `get_funder`, `list_filters`, `rounds_closing_soon`, `rounds_opening_soon`, `report_outcome`, `suggest_funder`, and `flag_funder_detail`.

The server also provides the `find_funders_for_project`, `prepare_application`, and `draft_application` prompts. These prompts support workflows that begin with a project description, continue through funder research, and move toward preparing or drafting an application.

For direct HTTP requests, clients must send both `application/json` and `text/event-stream` in the `Accept` header. Omitting this header combination can result in a 406 response from the MCP SDK.

## Setup and configuration

The simplest option is to connect an MCP client to `https://funding.alltoohuman.nz/mcp`; the README states that no login is needed for this hosted endpoint.

To run Community Funding NZ MCP server locally, copy `.env.example` to `.env`, fill in the required key, install the Node.js dependencies, build the project, and start it:

```bash
cp .env.example .env
npm install
npm run build
npm start
```

The README's example local endpoint is `http://localhost:3103/mcp`. A manual `tools/list` request should set `Content-Type: application/json` and `Accept: application/json, text/event-stream`.

## Tools and capabilities

- Search the funder database with `search_funders`.
- Retrieve a specific funder using `get_funder`.
- Discover supported filter values with `list_filters`.
- Find funding rounds closing soon or opening soon.
- Submit outcomes, suggest funders, and flag funder details for review.
- Use prompts for project-based funder discovery, application preparation, and application drafting.

## Limitations and notes

The provided material does not specify the name of the required local environment variable, so its exact configuration key must be taken from `.env.example`. Direct clients must support MCP over Streamable HTTP for the hosted endpoint or use the local server configuration. Requests to `/mcp` that omit the required `Accept` values may receive HTTP 406 instead of an MCP response.
