## What Common Paper MCP server does

The Common Paper MCP server lets an AI assistant work with contracts stored in Common Paper using plain-language requests. It supports searching and counting agreements, checking statuses, identifying signers and counterparties, reviewing upcoming expirations, and asking financial questions such as which CSA has the largest deal value.

Agreement actions include creating drafts, sending agreements after confirmation, voiding or reassigning them, resending signature emails, downloading PDFs, and generating shareable links. The server also supports templates for NDA, CSA, DPA, PSA, Partnership, BAA, LOI, Software License, Design Partner, and Pilot agreements. Custom terms and custom cover page templates are available when enabled for the organization.

The bundled plugin adds guidance for Common Paper’s agreement model, template parameters, onboarding, and safety rules. It starts agreements as drafts and confirms before actions that send email or change a live agreement.

## How it works

The connector is a remote MCP endpoint at `https://api.commonpaper.com/mcp` using Streamable HTTP. OAuth handles sign-in, and the assistant operates with the permissions of the authenticated Common Paper user. Access is limited to that user’s organization.

The plugin can use the connector for supported operations and the Common Paper REST API as a fallback for filtering by company name or end date, uploading Word files as custom terms, and creating a new account. The fallback requires network access to `api.commonpaper.com`; the plugin may use an API token for these operations and stores it only when permitted.

## Setup and configuration

You need a Common Paper account and an MCP client with OAuth support. Add the remote URL in a client’s MCP settings, or use the client-specific plugin or extension installation instructions. VS Code can configure the server in `.vscode/mcp.json` with an HTTP server entry pointing to the Common Paper endpoint.

The repository packages integrations for Claude Cowork, Claude Code, Cursor, Grok Build, and Gemini CLI. Gemini CLI installs the extension from the repository, while Claude Code, Cursor, and Grok Build provide marketplace or local installation options. After installation, connect `common-paper` and sign in when prompted.

## Tools and capabilities

- Search and count agreements, including signed and pending contracts.
- Draft and send agreements with confirmation before sending.
- Void, reassign, resend, download, and share agreements.
- Find signers, counterparties, deal values, and upcoming expirations.
- Create and update supported agreement templates.
- Publish custom terms and create custom cover page templates when enabled.
- Guide new-account setup through an onboarding flow.

## Limitations and notes

The connector only exposes agreements sent by the user’s organization; agreements received from another organization are not included. Custom terms and custom templates require organization-level enablement. Without the REST fallback, company-name searches may require paging through agreements and can be slower for large accounts.

A REST fallback can fail if the environment cannot reach `api.commonpaper.com`. The plugin then uses connector-supported capabilities instead. Contract text copied into custom terms is preserved character-for-character, and the assistant verifies the stored text after writing rather than correcting it automatically.
