## What clicksend-mcp-server MCP server does

The clicksend-mcp-server MCP server exposes selected ClickSend messaging operations to an MCP-compatible AI client. Its main use is SMS automation: an agent can send a message to a phone number, send to contacts associated with a contact list, check estimated pricing, and inspect existing messaging data.

The implementation is the official server from the ClickSend team. It is intended for developers who want an AI interface to ClickSend rather than building a separate application around the ClickSend REST API. The available functionality is focused on SMS and related account data, not general ClickSend services.

## How it works

The server uses ClickSend credentials supplied through environment variables and calls ClickSend’s supported endpoints on the agent’s behalf. The send operation accepts recipients as phone numbers or contacts from a contact list. Phone numbers must use E.164 formatting, such as `+61411111111`.

The server can also request SMS templates, retrieve sent-message history with filtering and pagination, calculate message pricing based on message type and length, and return SMS statistics for the previous 30 days. Contact-list searches provide lists that can be used when addressing messages to stored contacts.

## Setup and configuration

Node.js 18 or newer is required. Node Version Manager can be used to select a compatible Node.js version. You need a ClickSend username and API key, available from the ClickSend account dashboard after signing up.

For Claude Desktop, add an MCP server entry that runs the published package with `npx`, or point a `node` command at a locally built `build/clicksend-mcp.js` file. Supply these environment variables in the client configuration:

- `CLICKSEND_USERNAME`
- `CLICKSEND_API_KEY`

Restart Claude Desktop after changing its configuration. A successful connection exposes the SMS tool in the client’s tool interface. Keep both credentials out of source control and avoid including them in issue reports or pull requests.
