## What Chatway Live Chat MCP server does

The Chatway Live Chat MCP server gives AI agents access to selected parts of a Chatway workspace. It is intended for customer-support work rather than local development or self-hosting. The hosted service connects an MCP client to the Chatway inbox, where an authorized assistant can work with conversations, support tickets, and contacts.

Typical requests include finding unresolved conversations, summarizing a customer thread, drafting or sending a reply, searching the knowledge base for an answer, assigning conversations, adding private notes, tagging visitors, and resolving conversations. The exact tools exposed depend on the permissions granted during authorization. Tags and custom-data tools require a paid Chatway plan; the other listed plans include Free.

## How it works

The service is available at `https://mcp.chatway.app/mcp` and uses Streamable HTTP. Authentication uses OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration, so clients do not need a Chatway API key. During sign-in, the user selects the widgets, channels, and permissions to share with the assistant.

Only Chatway workspace owners and admins can authorize an assistant. After connection, actions remain subject to the authorizing user's Chatway role. Owners and admins can change the granted access or disconnect the integration under **AI → External AI**. Disconnecting revokes the token immediately.

The Chatway Live Chat MCP server also applies confirmation requirements to destructive and bulk operations. Resolving conversations, removing tags or custom data, and assigning items in bulk require confirmation in the client.

## Setup and configuration

Add the remote endpoint as a custom MCP server in a compatible client, then complete the browser-based Chatway sign-in. The repository documents client-specific procedures for Cursor, Cline, Gemini CLI, and GitHub Copilot in VS Code.

For Cline, configure the endpoint as a remote server with the `streamableHttp` type. Using the legacy SSE type causes an HTTP 400 error. VS Code uses an HTTP server entry and requires Copilot Chat to run in Agent mode. Cursor users can install the Chatway Marketplace plugin or configure the server through Cursor's MCP settings.

Gemini CLI users can install the repository extension with `gemini extensions install https://github.com/Chatway-app/chatway-mcp-server`, then run `/mcp auth chatway`. Browser authentication must occur on the same machine as Gemini CLI because the OAuth callback uses localhost.

This repository contains manifests, setup material, and publishing assets. It does not contain the hosted server implementation or secrets. The hosted Chatway service and MCP server are proprietary, while the repository's manifests, configuration, and documentation are available under MIT.
