## Documentation

## What Charter Boats MCP server does

The Charter Boats MCP server exposes Charter Boats search and reference data to compatible AI clients. Its catalog covers more than 14,000 charter boats worldwide, along with marinas, harbours, anchorages, sailing routes, local points of interest, articles and curated multi-day trips.

All eleven tools are read-only. Boat searches can filter by destination, boat type, dates, guest capacity and budget, returning up to eight results with prices, images and booking links. Boat detail queries add specifications, 365-day availability, fees, discounts, cancellation terms and check-in and check-out times. A comparison-oriented tool describes how one boat is better or worse than similar boats for a week.

## How it works

The service is hosted by Charter Boats rather than implemented in this repository. Clients connect to `https://charter.boats/mcp` using Streamable HTTP and JSON-RPC 2.0. No authentication is required. The repository contains listing metadata and a logo; the server code is not published there.

Location tools can find marinas, harbours and anchorages by name, regional popularity or reach from another place. Popularity is ranked using observed vessel traffic. Nearby searches cover restaurants, fuel, groceries, shops and attractions. Route results include sailing distance and difficulty, while trip results provide curated itineraries and, when expanded, day-by-day stops, activities, distances and highlights.

Three registered prompt presets are available to clients that display them: `plan-sailing-trip`, `find-charter-boat` and `explore-destination`. Clients supporting MCP Apps can render visual cards for `search_boats` and `search_locations`.

## Setup and configuration

Open `https://charter.boats/mcp` in a browser for the install page, or add the endpoint directly in an MCP client. Claude custom connectors and ChatGPT apps use the same URL with authentication left unset. Claude Code can be configured with:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http charter-boats https://charter.boats/mcp
```

For Cursor, add the following server entry to `~/.cursor/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "charter-boats": { "url": "https://charter.boats/mcp" }
  }
}
```

MCP Inspector can test the service with the Streamable HTTP transport and the same endpoint. There are no required environment variables or authentication credentials documented in the supplied material.

## Tools and capabilities

- Search boats using destination, type, dates, capacity and budget.
- Explore locations, nearby amenities, routes and curated sailing trips.
- Retrieve full boat availability, pricing, fees and booking conditions.
- Compare a boat with similar vessels for a week.
- Find destination guidance covering booking, costs, licences, deposits and check-in.
- Inspect points of interest, locations and trips in detail.

The service is suited to planning and research workflows where an agent needs current charter pricing and supporting destination context. It does not provide write or booking actions through these tools.

## Limitations and notes

Results and capabilities are subject to the service’s documented rate limits. The tools are read-only, so they cannot reserve a boat, modify a booking or change destination data. Although boat results include live prices and booking links, the supplied material does not state that the MCP server completes bookings itself. Clients must support MCP over Streamable HTTP, and visual cards or prompt presets depend on client support.
