## Description
California Data Exchange Center (CDEC) hydrology, reservoirs, snow water

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **station_info** — Station metadata.
- **daily_data** — Daily data for (station, sensor). CDEC's -9999 missing marker is returned as value: null with missing: true, and the response counts the gaps.
- **hourly_data** — Hourly data for (station, sensor). CDEC's -9999 missing marker is returned as value: null with missing: true, and the response counts the gaps.
- **event_data** — Event-based irregular readings for (station, sensor). CDEC's -9999 missing marker is returned as value: null with missing: true.
- **latest** — Most recent REAL reading for (station, sensor), looking back three days. CDEC writes -9999 into slots it has no reading for and the current day's trailing hours are routinely unwritten, so this skips those and reports how many missing slots it skipped rather than returning the marker as a number.
- **reservoirs** — Reservoir storage snapshots.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "cdec-ca": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@pipeworx/mcp-cdec-ca"]
  }
}
## Documentation
## What Cdec Ca does
Cdec Ca exposes California Data Exchange Center (CDEC) data from the California Department of Water Resources to MCP-compatible clients. The data covers station metadata, hydrology measurements, reservoir storage, snow water equivalent, stream gauges, and other sensor readings available through CDEC's services.
The integration supports both current lookups and historical queries. It is useful when an agent needs to identify a monitoring station, retrieve measurements for a date range, check a latest reading, or compare reservoir storage across stations. The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with or endorsed by CDEC or the California Department of Water Resources.
## How it works
The hosted MCP connection is available at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/cdec-ca/mcp`. Add that URL to an MCP client to call the CDEC-specific tools. The same gateway also exposes shared Pipeworx tools. A pack endpoint lists the CDEC tools by default, while setting `PIPEWORX_META_TOOLS=1` on the npm bridge adds gateway-wide tools such as `ask_pipeworx` and discovery functions.
Cdec Ca retrieves data from CDEC's JSON data service and station metadata endpoint. The hosted connection and the local npm bridge both require network access. The bridge forwards requests to the hosted gateway rather than running an offline copy of the data.
The tools can also be called without an MCP client through the Pipeworx HTTP API. For example, a tool request can be sent to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/station_info` with a JSON body containing a `station_id`.
## Setup and configuration
For a hosted setup, configure the MCP client with the Cdec Ca streamable HTTP URL. Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf are shown as supported client examples. A full Pipeworx gateway URL is also available when an agent needs all catalog packs listed directly.
For local stdio use, configure the client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-cdec-ca`. The package acts as a bridge to the same hosted endpoint. Anonymous use does not require a key and is limited to 50 calls per day. A free Pipeworx account increases the allowance to 200 calls per day; provide its key through the `PIPEWORX_API_KEY` environment variable. The key is sent as a Bearer token.
When running behind an HTTPS proxy, newer Node.js releases can use proxy environment settings when `NODE_USE_ENV_PROXY=1` is enabled.
## Tools and capabilities
- `station_info(station_id)` returns station metadata.
- `daily_data(station_id, sensor, start, end?)` retrieves daily SHEF records.
- `hourly_data(station_id, sensor, start, end?)` retrieves hourly SHEF records.
- `event_data(station_id, sensor, start, end?)` retrieves irregular event-based records.
- `latest(station_id, sensor)` returns the latest value for a sensor.
- `reservoirs(station_id?)` returns statewide reservoir snapshots or data for one station.
Sensor values use CDEC sensor numbers. Examples include sensor 15 for reservoir storage, 8 for full-natural flow, 76 for stream stage, and 3 for snow water equivalent.
## Limitations and notes
The integration depends on network access to the Pipeworx gateway and CDEC services. Anonymous calls are rate-limited to 50 per day, while an account raises the allowance to 200 per day. Pack endpoints include shared gateway meta-tools in addition to their listed pack tools when that option is enabled, so the visible tool count may exceed the six Cdec Ca tools. The project is an unofficial integration rather than an upstream CDEC service.
