## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **catalog_browse** — Browse the CBS time-series catalog. With no subject_id, returns the top-level subjects (Foreign Trade, Population, Balance of Payments, Consumer Price Index, etc.) — each with a numeric path id. Pass that id back as subject_id to drill into a subject's full set of leaf series paths. The catalog is hierarchical; each catalog entry has a 'path' breadcrumb array and a 'name'. Use this to discover what's available before calling get_series_data.
- **get_series_data** — Fetch the actual time-series observations for a CBS series by its numeric series id (the leaf id found via catalog_browse). Returns metadata (subject path, unit, prices, last update) plus an array of observations with TimePeriod (e.g. "2026-04") and Value. Covers Israeli economic and demographic statistics. Optionally filter by start_period / end_period (YYYY-MM or YYYY).
- **index_catalog** — List the official CBS price-index catalog tree: chapters (Consumer Price Index, Wholesale Price Index, Housing Price Index, etc.) and their codes. Each code has a numeric codeId used by get_index_data. Use this to find the index code you want (e.g. 120010 = Consumer Price Index - General).
- **get_index_data** — Fetch monthly values for a CBS price index by its numeric code (from index_catalog, e.g. 120010 = CPI General). Returns per-month entries with the index value, the monthly percent change (percent) and the year-over-year change (percentYear) — i.e. Israeli inflation. Optionally filter by start_period / end_period (YYYY-MM or YYYY).

## What Cbs Il does

Cbs Il exposes selected Israel Central Bureau of Statistics data through Model Context Protocol. It supports two related discovery-and-retrieval workflows:

- The general time-series catalog contains subjects such as foreign trade, population, balance of payments, and consumer prices.
- The price-index catalog contains official index families, including consumer, wholesale, and housing price indexes.

The server is useful when an agent needs structured Israeli economic or demographic observations rather than a general web search. Returned series include metadata such as the catalog path, unit, pricing information, and last update. Observations contain a time period and value.

## How it works

Catalog discovery comes before data retrieval. Call `catalog_browse` without an identifier to receive top-level subjects. Each entry has a numeric path ID, name, and breadcrumb path. Passing a subject ID reveals deeper catalog entries until a leaf series ID is available for `get_series_data`.

Price indexes use a separate lookup path. `index_catalog` returns chapters and index codes, which can then be supplied to `get_index_data`. For example, the catalog identifies the code for the general Consumer Price Index. Index results include the index value, monthly percentage movement, and year-over-year percentage movement.

Both data retrieval tools accept optional `start_period` and `end_period` filters. Periods use `YYYY-MM` or `YYYY`, depending on the requested range. The gateway also supports the shared `ask_pipeworx` tool, which can route a plain-language question to an appropriate tool across the Pipeworx catalog.

The same gateway also provides a full endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp`. The scoped endpoint lists the Cbs Il tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools; the full endpoint lists tools from the wider source catalog. The gateway's initialization response defines the exact tool scope for a connection.

The local process communicates over stdin and stdout and exposes only the Cbs Il package tools. The remote tools can also be called with HTTP; for example, a POST request to `/v1/tools/catalog_browse` accepts a JSON body containing `subject_id`.

## Tools and capabilities

- `catalog_browse`: Explore the hierarchical CBS time-series catalog and locate leaf series IDs.
- `get_series_data`: Retrieve observations and series metadata, optionally bounded by dates.
- `index_catalog`: Find official price-index chapters, names, and numeric codes.
- `get_index_data`: Retrieve monthly index levels, monthly changes, and year-over-year changes.

## Limitations and notes

This is an independent, unofficial integration rather than a service published or endorsed by Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics. General series and price indexes use separate catalogs and identifiers, so a code from one discovery tool should not be assumed to work with the other retrieval tool.

Gateway connections include shared Pipeworx tools in addition to the four package tools. The standalone package avoids those gateway-wide tools and does not provide cross-catalog `ask_pipeworx` routing. HTTP access is available without an account for initial calls.
