## Documentation

## What callmybot-cookbook-mcp-server MCP server does

The caller specifies the character and the text to inspect, then receives a precise count.

The project is a TypeScript implementation built with the official MCP TypeScript SDK and Express. Its repository also contains deployment files for running the service in a custom Docker container through Smithery.

## How it works

The service supports two MCP transport modes. HTTP mode runs an Express-based MCP server and is intended for network or browser-based clients. STDIO mode is available for compatibility with clients and workflows that launch MCP processes directly. The selected mode is controlled by the `TRANSPORT` environment variable.

When operated over HTTP, the server adds CORS headers, records HTTP request and response activity through middleware, and processes session configuration supplied by Smithery. These features are relevant when the service is exposed through a hosted deployment or accessed by a browser-based MCP client.

## Setup and configuration

Local development requires Node.js 22 or newer and npm. Install the project dependencies with:

```bash
npm install
```

The documented development command starts HTTP mode on port 8081:

```bash
npm run dev
```

With the service running, the Smithery playground can connect to the local port for interactive testing:

```bash
npx -y @smithery/cli playground --port 8081
```

The repository includes `src/index.ts` for the main server, `package.json` for dependencies and scripts, `smithery.yaml` for Smithery deployment and session configuration, and a `Dockerfile` for container hosting.

## Tools and capabilities

The callmybot-cookbook-mcp-server MCP server supports:

- Counting occurrences of a specified character in text.
- Serving MCP requests over HTTP.
- Serving MCP requests over STDIO.
- Adding CORS headers for browser-based HTTP clients.
- Logging HTTP requests and responses for debugging.
- Handling Smithery session configuration.

## Limitations and notes

This is a narrow example server rather than a documented general-purpose text toolkit. Confirm those behaviors against the source before depending on them in production.

The project documentation focuses on custom-container hosting on Smithery and local development. It provides an HTTP development port of 8081, but it does not document a separate production port configuration. The callmybot-cookbook-mcp-server MCP server can be deployed through Smithery or run locally, provided the required Node.js and npm prerequisites are available.
