## Description
Spanish Bible atlas as MCP tools: people, places, events, passages, each linked to its source

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **search** — Records by name, Spanish ("Pablo") or a Bible book in Spanish or English ("Acts"); `did_you_mean` on a miss
- **get_record** — One record in full, with its sources
- **get_records** — Up to 20 records in one call
- **list_records** — Periods, letters, journeys, finds, tours, books, months; places of a kind; holders of an office
- **list_events** — Events by year, person, place, role, kind or Bible book
- **people_in_year** — Who was alive or active in a year, with the evidence
- **lookup_passage** — What the atlas has on a reference ("Hch 16:1" or "Acts 16:1")
- **find_connection** — The shortest chain of ties between two people
- **places_near** — Places within a radius of a place or a point
- **dataset_info** — Freshness, counts, and the values the `kind` and `role` filters accept

## Documentation

## What biblical-atlas-mcp does

biblical-atlas-mcp makes the biblical-atlas Bible atlas available to AI agents through MCP. Its dataset covers people, places, events, periods, letters, journeys, books, passages, offices, and related records. Responses preserve the atlas’s Spanish names and summaries.

Results include atlas identifiers and, where available, links to the corresponding record card on the atlas website. Source links accompany the returned information: list responses identify an available source and the total source count, while `get_record` returns the complete source list.

All ten tools are read-only. They return both structured MCP content and JSON text, and do not modify the atlas data.

## How it works

The package fetches the atlas’s public data file rather than bundling a database or a copy of the atlas data. It caches that file locally and performs an hourly conditional refresh, allowing repeated requests to use the cached dataset when it remains current.

The server supports MCP over stdio and streamable HTTP, and handles MCP revisions from 2024-11-05 through 2026-07-28. It also supports clients using the older `initialize` flow alongside newer discovery and stateless request behavior.

Dates use signed years in both directions. For example, `-607` represents 607 a.e.c. Bible references can be supplied in Spanish or English forms where supported, such as `Hch 16:1` and `Acts 16:1`.

## Setup and configuration

Node.js 18 or newer is required. Running the npm package downloads a release binary for the host platform on first use and verifies it against checksums published with the package.

A stdio configuration can be added with the command `npx -y biblical-atlas-mcp`. Claude Code can register it with `claude mcp add biblical-atlas -- npx -y biblical-atlas-mcp`. Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, and Codex configurations are also documented using their respective MCP configuration formats.

## Tools and capabilities

- `search` finds records by name or Bible book, accepts Spanish and English book names, ignores accents and case, and can return a suggestion for an unsuccessful match.
- `get_record` returns one record with detailed relationships, family information, offices, coordinates, candidate sites, events at a place, and all available sources.
- `get_records` retrieves up to 20 records in one request.
- `list_records` lists periods, letters, journeys, finds, tours, books, months, places by kind, or people holding an office.
- `list_events` filters events by year or range, person, place, role, kind, or Bible book, with date or story ordering.
- `people_in_year` identifies people alive, ruling, or active in a year and includes supporting evidence.
- `lookup_passage` finds atlas content associated with a Bible reference, including relevant events, people, places, and records.
- `find_connection` calculates the shortest chain of family, succession, and companionship ties between two people.
- `places_near` searches for places within a radius of another place or a coordinate.
- `dataset_info` reports dataset freshness, record counts, and accepted `kind` and `role` filter values.

## Limitations and notes

The atlas is Spanish-language, so names and summaries are returned in Spanish. The tools only read the atlas’s own data file; they do not write, delete, or access other data sources. Because the package obtains its data remotely instead of including it, the initial run requires access to the atlas’s public data endpoint.
