## Description
A soundboard MCP server with millions of meme sounds from myinstants.com. Search, play, and browse categories — let your AI agent play vine boom when code compiles. npx myinstants-mcp

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **search_sounds** — Search myinstants.com for sound buttons.
- **browse_category** — Browse sounds by category on myinstants.com.
- **play_sound** — Play a sound from myinstants.com. Returns the sound duration in seconds so you can plan around async playback.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "myinstants-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","myinstants-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "MYINSTANTS_VOLUME": "",
      "MYINSTANTS_WAIT": "",
      "MYINSTANTS_DEVICE": "",
      "MYINSTANTS_PLAYER": "",
      "MYINSTANTS_DETAILS": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `MYINSTANTS_VOLUME`, `MYINSTANTS_WAIT`, `MYINSTANTS_DEVICE`, `MYINSTANTS_PLAYER`, `MYINSTANTS_DETAILS` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What austenstone/myinstants-mcp does

austenstone/myinstants-mcp MCP server gives an MCP-compatible AI client access to the myinstants.com soundboard. Agents can find sounds, inspect category listings, and start playback through the machine's audio output. The catalog includes categories such as memes, games, reactions, movies, music, sound effects, sports, television, TikTok trends, and viral sounds.

The primary workflow is to search for a sound and then play a result. Playback can use a search query, an exact slug returned by search, or a direct MP3 URL. The server reports the sound duration, which lets an agent account for playback timing.

## How it works

The server runs as a local command launched with `npx myinstants-mcp`, communicating with the client over MCP. A search request queries myinstants.com for matching sound buttons. A category request retrieves sounds from a named category. A play request resolves the supplied query, slug, or URL and sends the audio to a local player.

By default, playback can continue in the background while the agent proceeds. Setting the wait option to true makes the request block until the sound ends. Multiple sounds are queued so they play sequentially rather than overlapping. Available player choices include `afplay`, `ffplay`, `mpv`, and `paplay`, depending on the platform and local installation.

## Setup and configuration

Start the austenstone/myinstants-mcp MCP server with:

```bash
npx myinstants-mcp
```

The README provides MCP configuration examples for VS Code or GitHub Copilot, Claude Desktop, and Cursor. macOS uses the native `afplay` command without an additional installation.

Supported environment variables include:

- `MYINSTANTS_VOLUME`: Sets volume from 0 to 1; the default is 0.5.
- `MYINSTANTS_WAIT`: Sets the default waiting behavior; the default is false.
- `MYINSTANTS_DEVICE`: Selects a platform-specific audio output device.
- `MYINSTANTS_PLAYER`: Forces `ffplay`, `mpv`, `afplay`, or `paplay`.
- `MYINSTANTS_DETAILS`: Enables the optional detail and device-listing tools when set to true.

## Tools and capabilities

The austenstone/myinstants-mcp MCP server exposes these core tools:

- `search_sounds`: Searches myinstants.com and returns matching sound buttons, including slugs.
- `browse_category`: Lists sounds within a myinstants.com category.
- `play_sound`: Plays a sound using a query, slug, or URL and returns its duration.

When `MYINSTANTS_DETAILS=true`, two additional tools are available:

- `get_sound_details`: Returns information such as views, uploader, and duration.
- `list_devices`: Lists available audio output devices.

These are exposed through `myinstants://trending`, `myinstants://categories`, and `myinstants://best`.

## Limitations and notes

Playback depends on an audio player and a usable local output device. Device names and selection flags vary by player and operating system. The server is intended for clients that can launch a local stdio MCP process; it does not describe a hosted playback service. Optional tools are unavailable unless `MYINSTANTS_DETAILS` is enabled. Sound availability and search results depend on myinstants.com.
