## What the Appllama MCP server does

The Appllama MCP server connects an AI agent to Appllama’s library of top-grossing mobile apps. The library contains real screens, user flows, interface patterns, and revenue or download context. Its purpose is to support research-led mobile app construction rather than generic UI generation.

The accompanying skills package gives agents a structured way to use that research. The `appllama-usage` skill covers the MCP tool map and research playbooks for starting an app, improving an existing screen, and investigating flows or interface elements. The separate `appllama-app-design-skill` focuses on implementing native-feeling Expo and React Native screens, including navigation, motion, semantic colors, native controls, generated assets, and simulator review.

## How it works

An agent sends research requests through the remote MCP endpoint and can study relevant apps before writing or revising a screen. Example tasks include comparing onboarding structures in leading fitness apps, examining where a paywall appears, reviewing checkout navigation, or evaluating a screen from a screenshot, code sample, or Appllama screen reference.

Research and implementation are intended to form a loop. The agent first identifies patterns in successful apps, then applies those findings while building the product. The design skill extends the process with a simulator-based review of complete flows, including recorded motion and frame-by-frame inspection rather than relying only on static screenshots.

## Setup and configuration

Connect an MCP client to:

Add the endpoint as a custom connector and approve access with an Appllama account. MCP access is included with the Pro plan. Credits reset on the first day of each month, and each MCP call consumes one credit; `get_credits` does not consume credits.

The repository also contains installable agent skills. Install the full package from a project directory with:

Specific skills can be selected with `--skill`, and the package can be installed for Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex. Manual installation is also supported by copying the skill directories into the relevant agent skills folder.

## Tools and capabilities

The Appllama MCP server supports research into:

- Screens and UI patterns from top-grossing mobile apps
- App flows, including onboarding and checkout
- Paywall placement and structure
- Category-specific design language
- Revenue and download context
- Individual screen references supplied from Appllama

The design skill adds implementation guidance for Expo and React Native, Apple HIG alignment, push versus replace navigation, sheets and overlays, one-way navigation states, animation choices, and simulator verification. It can be used without the MCP connection, although the repository states that the skill is more effective with the connection available.

## Limitations and notes

The MCP endpoint requires an Appllama account and Pro access. Usage is credit-based, so research volume is subject to the monthly credit balance. The repository describes the skills and connection process but does not list the individual MCP tools beyond `get_credits`; consult the connected service for the current tool surface.

The design skill is not itself dependent on MCP. Installing only that skill provides its mobile implementation and simulator workflow, but not the Appllama research engine.
