## What animequotes does

animequotes exposes animechan.io's quote data through the Model Context Protocol. Its three dedicated tools cover random retrieval and two targeted searches:

- `random_quote` returns a quote together with the character name and anime series title.
- `search_by_anime` finds quotes associated with a named anime series, such as Attack on Titan.
- `search_by_character` finds quotes associated with a named character, such as Naruto Uzumaki.

The package is an independent, unofficial integration and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by animechan.io.

## How it works

The server can be reached through the Pipeworx gateway or run as a local MCP process. The hosted pack endpoint is `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/animequotes/mcp`. A full gateway connection is also available at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp`.

The pack endpoint lists the anime quote tools along with shared Pipeworx gateway tools. Those shared tools include routing and discovery capabilities such as `ask_pipeworx`, which can direct broader questions across the gateway's data sources. The local process exposes only the three animequotes tools and does not include those gateway-wide tools.

The service can also be called through HTTP. For example, a POST request to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/animequotes_random_quote` with an empty JSON object invokes the random quote operation. Tool details can be inspected through the gateway's tool inspection endpoint.

## Setup and configuration

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-animequotes` directly to verify that the local process starts. The standalone mode requires no Pipeworx account and communicates over standard input and output. The hosted gateway requires no account for its first calls.

## Tools and capabilities

Use `random_quote` when the agent needs an unspecific anime quotation. Use `search_by_anime` when the series title is the primary filter, and `search_by_character` when the character name is known.

Search results include the quote text and identifying character and series information. This makes the tools suitable for returning attribution alongside the quotation rather than producing quote text alone.

## Limitations and notes

The local and hosted modes expose the same anime quote source and dedicated tools, but they differ in scope. Local stdio exposes only the animequotes pack. The hosted pack endpoint also presents shared Pipeworx meta-tools, so its listed tool count is larger than the three anime-specific operations. The gateway's initialization response defines the exact scope reported for a connection.

The integration is intended for anime quote lookup. It does not provide a general anime catalog, episode search, or other media operations. The package is licensed under MIT.
