## Description
An API of Ice and Fire — A Song of Ice and Fire (books/characters/houses)

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **books** — Search and list A Song of Ice and Fire books filterable by name, release date range (fromReleaseDate/toReleaseDate), with pagination (page, pageSize); returns ISBN, authors, publisher, number of pages, and character lists.
- **book** — Single book by id.
- **characters** — Search and list ASOIAF characters filterable by name, culture, birth/death descriptor, gender, and alive status; returns aliases, titles, house affiliations, and book/POV appearances.
- **character** — Single character by id.
- **houses** — Search/list houses.
- **house** — Single house by id.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "anapioficeandfire": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@pipeworx/mcp-anapioficeandfire"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What Anapioficeandfire does

Anapioficeandfire exposes the An API of Ice and Fire as MCP tools for querying A Song of Ice and Fire data. It covers three resource types:

- Books, including names, release dates, ISBNs, authors, publishers, page counts, and character lists.
- Characters, including aliases, titles, house affiliations, and book or point-of-view appearances.
- Houses, which can be searched and retrieved individually.

Collection queries can return multiple records with pagination. Book searches accept a name and release-date range. Character searches support name, culture, birth and death descriptors, gender, and alive status. House searches support name, region, words, titles, seats, extinct status, and ancestral weapons.

## How it works

The tools use data from `https://anapioficeandfire.com/api/`. MCP clients can connect to the Pipeworx endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/anapioficeandfire/mcp`, where the pack's tools are exposed alongside shared Pipeworx gateway tools. The gateway also provides `ask_pipeworx`, which can route a natural-language question to an appropriate tool.

A local alternative runs the package as a stdio MCP server. This mode handles MCP initialization, tool discovery, and tool calls for the Anapioficeandfire tools only; it does not include the gateway's shared meta-tools. The same data source and pack-specific operations are available in either mode.

The gateway also exposes HTTP tool endpoints. For example, clients can send a JSON POST request to `/v1/tools/books` to run a book search, without configuring an MCP client.

## Setup and configuration

For a hosted MCP connection, add the following server URL to a compatible client:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "anapioficeandfire": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/anapioficeandfire/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

The package can instead be launched locally with `npx`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "anapioficeandfire": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-anapioficeandfire"]
    }
  }
}
```

No API key or Pipeworx account is required for the standalone package, and the gateway supports initial calls without an account.

## Tools and capabilities

- `books(name?, fromReleaseDate?, toReleaseDate?, page?, pageSize?)` searches and paginates books.
- `book(id)` retrieves one book.
- `characters(name?, culture?, born?, died?, isAlive?, gender?, page?, pageSize?)` searches and paginates characters.
- `character(id)` retrieves one character.
- `houses(name?, region?, words?, hasTitles?, hasSeats?, hasDiedOut?, hasAncestralWeapons?, page?, pageSize?)` searches and paginates houses.
- `house(id)` retrieves one house.

## Limitations and notes

The integration is independent and unofficial, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the upstream data provider. A hosted pack endpoint includes shared Pipeworx tools in addition to the six pack-specific tools, so its advertised tool list is larger than the local stdio server's list. Use the local package when only the Anapioficeandfire tools are needed.
