## Documentation

## What algoum-mcp MCP server does

The algoum-mcp MCP server connects AI assistants to the algoum API, which serves published US SEC EDGAR information. Its coverage includes insider purchases and sales reported on Forms 4 and 5, company disclosures filed on Form 8-K, and quarterly institutional portfolios from Form 13F.

The service is read-only. An assistant can search one company or the broader market, identify clusters of insider buying, calculate an officer buy-to-sell ratio over a period, search event histories, and find recent filings. For 13F data, it can return a fund’s reported portfolio or summarize how many institutions hold a stock and how many increased, reduced, or opened positions.

Additional lookups cover company identifiers such as CIKs, the original SEC filing associated with a result, and the current freshness of the data source.

## How it works

The server is hosted at `https://api.algoum.de/v1/mcp` and uses Streamable HTTP. Requests authenticate with an API key sent as a Bearer token. Once connected, the assistant can inspect the available tools and choose among them based on a natural-language request. The API description is also available to the assistant when more endpoint detail is needed.

Insider trades and material events are available within minutes of filing, according to the documentation. Returned timestamps use US Eastern Time and follow the SEC’s reported times. Form 13F results represent positions reported for a quarter; they should not be interpreted as direct money-flow data.

## Setup and configuration

Create an API key in the algoum portal and store it in `ALGOUM_API_KEY`:

```sh
export ALGOUM_API_KEY='<your key>'
```

Configure an MCP client with the endpoint below and send the key as an authorization header:

- URL: `https://api.algoum.de/v1/mcp`
- Transport: Streamable HTTP
- Header: `Authorization: Bearer <your key>`

The documentation provides configuration examples for VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot CLI. APM can also install the package for a selected assistant target. After configuration, verify that the server is connected and that its tools are enabled. A direct `tools/list` JSON-RPC request can be used to check the connection.

## Tools and capabilities

The algoum-mcp MCP server supports agent queries for:

- Form 4 and Form 5 insider buys and sells by company or across the market.
- Insider-buyer clusters within a selected period.
- Officer buy/sell ratios for a company and time range.
- Form 8-K event searches, including recent filings and event categories such as leadership changes, mergers, bankruptcies, cyber incidents, and earnings releases.
- Form 13F fund portfolios, stock-level institutional ownership counts, and changes such as opened, increased, or reduced positions.
- Ticker, company, CIK, source-filing, and data-freshness lookups.

## Limitations and notes

Access is limited to published SEC data and does not provide write operations. Form 13F information is quarterly reported holdings rather than a real-time portfolio or a measure of cash movement. Data timing differs by source type, although insider trades and material events are documented as arriving within minutes of filing. An API key is required, and the service uses the hosted algoum endpoint rather than a locally run server.
