## Description
Algeria's 69 wilayas and 1541 communes, GPS lookups, and checks for Algerian formats.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **search_communes** — find communes by name in French or Arabic, with old names, transliterations and typos
- **get_wilaya** — a wilaya by code or name, with its communes
- **get_commune** — a commune by ONS code, with its wilaya under the 69, 58 and 48 maps
- **wilaya_changes** — communes moved by the 2026 or 2019 reform
- **locate_point** — the commune and wilaya of a GPS point
- **validate** — check a phone number, RIB, RIP, CCP, plate, postal code, NIN, NIF, NIS, RC, wilaya or commune

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "algeria": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@syscli/algeria-mcp"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What Algeria does

The Algeria MCP server exposes structured information about Algeria’s wilayas and communes through MCP tools. It covers the 69-wilaya structure and 1,541 communes, with data sourced from the Journal officiel. Agents can search commune names in French or Arabic, resolve administrative relationships, identify the commune containing a GPS point, and inspect changes from the 2019 and 2026 reforms.

It also includes checks for Algerian formats and identifiers. Supported validation targets include phone numbers, RIB, RIP, CCP, vehicle plates, postal codes, NIN, NIF, NIS, RC, wilaya names or codes, and commune names or codes. All exposed tools are read-only.

## How it works

The package runs as a local MCP server over stdio. Its geographic and format data are included in the npm package, so the server does not need to call an online API or make other network requests during use. An MCP-compatible assistant starts the process and invokes the tools as needed.

The `locate_point` capability uses boundary data from OpenStreetMap through geoBoundaries. The format rules come from the `@syscli/dz-format` project, which records the source of each rule. Commune and wilaya data come from the related `@syscli/algeria` project.

## Setup and configuration

Node.js 18 or later is required. Install the server through `npx` rather than adding a separate application installation. For Claude Code, the command is:

```sh
claude mcp add algeria -- npx -y @syscli/algeria-mcp
```

For Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP clients, add a server entry with `npx` as the command and `-y @syscli/algeria-mcp` as its arguments:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "algeria": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@syscli/algeria-mcp"]
    }
  }
}
```

No environment variables or service credentials are required according to the supplied setup instructions. The project is also listed in the MCP Registry as `io.github.syscli/algeria-mcp`.

## Tools and capabilities

- `search_communes`: finds communes using French or Arabic names, including former names, transliterations, and typos.
- `get_wilaya`: retrieves a wilaya by code or name and returns its communes.
- `get_commune`: resolves a commune by ONS code and reports its wilaya under the 69-, 58-, and 48-wilaya maps.
- `wilaya_changes`: reports communes moved by the 2019 or 2026 administrative reforms.
- `locate_point`: maps a GPS coordinate to a commune and wilaya.
- `validate`: checks the supported Algerian numbers, identifiers, administrative values, and document formats.

## Limitations and notes

The Algeria MCP server is intended for read-only lookup and validation; it does not modify records or submit forms. Its geographic boundary source is OpenStreetMap via geoBoundaries and is licensed CC BY-SA 2.0, with OpenStreetMap contributors credited. The related geographic and format packages are listed as MIT-licensed, and the MCP project itself is released under MIT.

Because the package is local and ships its data, it is useful in environments where outbound network access is restricted. Results depend on the data and rules bundled with the installed package version, so review the project’s releases when administrative or validation rules change.
