## What Aletheore MCP server does

The Aletheore MCP server gives coding agents a structured way to inspect a repository. It is part of Aletheore, a local-first repository analysis tool that writes scan evidence to the project. The MCP interface exposes 36 tools by default, with a 37th external capability available when `ALETHEORE_MCP_ALLOW=external` is enabled.

Available operations cover module and symbol lookups, dependency relationships, ownership analysis, code clusters, dead-code detection, hotspots, full-text search, and semantic search. The server can also trigger scans and build or refresh its index. This makes it suitable for agents that need to answer questions about a codebase from analyzed repository data rather than repeatedly reading files through shell commands.

Aletheore belongs to the **💻 Developer Tools** category and is intended for repository-aware development workflows. The wider scanner supports Python, JavaScript and JSX, TypeScript and TSX, Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin, Ruby, PHP, C, C++, C#, and Swift.

## How it works

Run the MCP service through Aletheore's `mcp` command. It communicates over stdio and uses the repository's evidence and indexes as its source of context. By default, the service watches for file changes and performs rescans in the background; pass `--no-watch` when that behavior is not wanted.

The underlying scan is deterministic and does not require an LLM or an account. It examines languages, frameworks, build tools, source structure, dependency relationships, Git history, secrets, known dependency vulnerabilities and licenses, and API endpoints. Vulnerability and license checks may use registry lookups, while the rest of the local scan can be run without network access. MCP queries therefore depend on the available scan and index state.

The Aletheore MCP server also supports result-size controls for repository-wide tools. Results that exceed their default budget retain their structure and can be retrieved incrementally with `section`, `offset`, `limit`, or `filter` parameters.

## Setup and configuration

Install Aletheore from PyPI, then start the MCP command from the repository you want an agent to inspect. The project documents an `mcp-install` command that can wire the service into Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Kiro, Opencode, or Codex CLI automatically. The README does not specify additional required environment variables for normal operation.

Set `ALETHEORE_MCP_ALLOW=external` only when the additional external tool should be enabled. File watching can instead be disabled with the `--no-watch` command-line option. The local MCP workflow, along with `scan`, `query`, and `diff`, is described as requiring no account or API key.

## Tools and capabilities

The Aletheore MCP server provides tools for:

- Looking up modules, symbols, dependencies, and ownership
- Finding code clusters, dead code, and repository hotspots
- Running full-text and semantic searches
- Triggering scans and index operations
- Paging through oversized repository-wide results
- Reading scan-backed context as files change

These capabilities are useful for code navigation, dependency investigation, architecture questions, and targeted repository analysis. They do not represent the hosted Aletheore AIR features, such as managed pull-request review or production monitoring, which are described separately as part of the GitHub App.

## Limitations and notes

The MCP service is local and stdio-based, so the agent must be configured to launch it in the relevant repository environment. Search and analysis quality depends on the scanner's generated evidence and current index. The README distinguishes the deterministic MCP workflow from `audit`, which uses an external or local model to produce a grounded report; the MCP server itself is presented as a query interface rather than that report-generation command.

The project license is PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0. The README names several clients that `mcp-install` can configure, but it does not claim that every MCP-capable client has an Aletheore-specific installer integration.
